This article shares information regarding the aftercare and healing process for your tattoo once you have left the studio.
Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring your tattoo heals well and looks its best in the long run. Here are some general tattoo aftercare instructions:
- Leave the wrap on for the duration advised: Your tattoo artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a plaster/second skin or plastic wrap. Keep it on for the time recommended by your artist, typically around 6 – 12 hours for the wrap and 2-3 days for the plaster/second skin, to protect the tattoo from airborne bacteria.
- Wash your hands: Before touching your tattoo, make sure your hands are clean to prevent infections.
- Gently wash the tattoo: After removing the covering, use lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap to wash your tattooed area. Wash the skin softly but make sure it is properly clean. Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel—do not rub it. Do not recover with another wrap. The tattoo needs to breathe.
- Apply a thin layer of ointment or tattoo-specific cream: Your tattoo artist may recommend a specific ointment or cream to apply to the tattooed area. Use it sparingly and make sure to follow their instructions. We suggest plain creams such as E45 and Vasaline Intencesive Care/Advanced Repair moisturizer. You need only to apply a thin layer that can be absorbed into the tattood area. Please avoid caking it with thick layers or using petroleum jellies.
- Keep it moisturized: For the next few weeks, keep your tattoo moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion. Apply it a few times a day in a small amount/thin layers that get absorbed to prevent the tattoo from drying out. Do not cake or smother the tattoo with cream, it is important for it to still breathe while healing.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight and tanning beds during the healing process. UV rays can fade the tattoo and irritate the healing skin.
- Avoid swimming and soaking: Stay away from swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths for at least two weeks to avoid exposing your tattoo to excess moisture. Rather rinse your tattoo in the shower or under a running tap.
- Avoid picking or scratching: Itchiness is a common part of the healing process, but refrain from scratching or picking at your tattoo to prevent scarring and infection. You can give it a light pat for relief.
- Wear loose clothing: If possible, wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo during the healing process to prevent irritation.
- Avoid gym and physical activities: Minimize strenuous physical activity that could cause excessive sweating and rubbing against the tattoo.
- Stay away from saunas and steam rooms: The same as soaking your tattoo in water or baths, excessive heat and moisture in saunas and steam rooms can negatively affect your healing tattoo. The process will be slowed and it can open up to infection.
- Be patient: Healing times can vary from person to person and depending on the size and complexity of the tattoo. Be patient and let your body take its natural course in the healing process.
If you notice any signs of infection (such as excessive redness, swelling, pus, or increased pain), consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Always follow your tattoo artist’s specific aftercare instructions, as different artists may have their own recommendations based on their experience and the tattooing technique used. Proper aftercare will help ensure that your tattoo heals as well as possible and maintains its quality for years to come.
